Amigos of Costa Rica was founded by the Costa Rica – United States of America Foundation for Cooperation (CR-USA) as its U.S. based fundraising arm and representative. Its leadership is provided by a small Board of Trustees made up of private volunteer individuals with an interest in Costa Rica, and specifically, in helping to support charitable causes in Costa Rica.

Amigos' Mission is to:

"Effectively serve as the U.S. based fundraising arm of the CR-USA Foundation, helping to supplement CR-USA’s annual budget in a meaningful way, thus contributing in an important manner to CR-USA’s activities in Costa Rica."

Amigos of Costa Rica only supports projects which have been submitted to Amigos of Costa Rica by CR-USA, and which have been approved by the Board of Trustees of Amigos of Costa Rica.
